On lateness, and priorities

Hey, blog-friends. How’s tricks?

It’s just over a month since I was last on these pages, and I can only apologise. What caused this unplanned hiatus? Nothing special, not really. I’ve had a lot of work (paid-for, demanding) on, plus I’ve tried to be a more social creature, trying to touch other 3-D human beings from time to time as well. I tried to blog, honest. But then I realised how tired I was at the end of most working days, and then I thought about how much effort was required of me to try and be funny about handsome dudes, or not be boring about a London encounter and I grew weary. So I became later and later. And prioritised fun (but paid) work over writing fun (but voluntary) work. End result is blog neglect. Soz.

So this is just a note to let you know that I’m alive, mostly well, and still here, even though not really. Below is a selection of things I’ve managed to fit in in the last month.

I read Chinua Achebe’s Home and Exile – and regurgitated extended extracts over on my Tumblr. I also read Junot Diaz’s This Is How You Lose Her and bits of Far From The Tree by Andrew Solomon before my library loan time was up. They are all excellent books, and I wholeheartedly recommend them. I also saw the new Star Trek movie at the cinema, and Up In The Air on DVD. I saw Ed Miliband deliver a speech as a magazine party I went to (he has so much more presence in, um, person) and I attended a Women in Journalism event in a gallery that had a Pissaro, a couple of Warhols and a Monet. Yeah. I saw Lenny Henry be pretty ace in August Wilson’s Fences (and discovered that the n-word is always a shock; always a whip to my ears, even in art). Song-wise, I fell in love with Pharrell’s Happy, and Amel Larrieux’s Afraid.

And since a picture is worth a thousand words (or maybe fewer in a recession), how’s about a quick Instagram collage, eh?

Hope to find a balance in which nothing loses out pretty soon. See you around on the internet.
